Herding Horses

I know  I mention this every chance I get, but this really is the view from the dining room and the bedroom in my Athlone apartment. Just imagine that beyond those trees is the River Shannon. Ok, it's probably half a mile away, but I like to think of it as part of my personal landscape. Nice, huh?

While I was sitting at the table getting some things ready for next week, three guys – one on a quad – and two dogs came out to herd some horses back to the stable.  It took them several minutes, and I think the most fun was watching the dogs, one of whom has legs about six inches long racing around and between the horses and the quad. They love it!

Just as I'm writing this a couple of men went racing across the field on two large horses both of whom easily jumped the obstacles built into the fence for that purpose.  Now they are riding below the window and calling good-natured insults to each other.  Life is good.

That wee dog is most likely a Border Collie. Have you ever seen my Katie’s video about those dogs? These dogs are brainiacs and outhink the horses. You are right, they LOVE working. Here’s the link to Katie’s video about these critters.

Yes, there are actually two border collies that work at this farm and they are amazing – clearly trained to work. But there are a couple of little wacadoodle mutts that just tear around and always look to me like they are about to be run over. I swear their legs may only be four inches long. Loved Katies video!
