Banish Misfortune

Last night I went to Flannery’s (my favorite pub in Athlone) with my colleague Chas Moore who is teaching music this summer.  We got there about 8:00 and it was still quite bright outside. There were a few musicians there and Chas sat in. I only stayed about an hour.  Of course many more people came later and Chas ended up playing with them until after midnight.

I took this photo while they were playing a song called “Banish Misfortune”.  I learned that it is also called the “Circumcision Song”, or “Banish My Foreskin”, or in some select circles, “Varnish My Foreskin”.

It’s true what they say; travel does broaden one’s worldview and knowledge base.

Counterclockwise from the right are Chas Moore, The Bean, Maria, Cormac, and Des.

I was thinking about you and missing the days when you sent an email with new blog entries, for often in the blur of the day I’d forget to check your postings. This morning I found the link on my work computer and was delighted to read about Banish the Foreskin and safe driving tips in Athlone. I’m grateful for your blog and your lovely descriptions transport me to the Irish lea. Be safe.

Thanks, Carol! I’m so glad you enjoyed them. I was just thinking that I probably should send out an email that the blog was up again to those not on facebook.
