The Essence of the Human Story by Ralph Muzio

I had heard about and seen posts announcing different storytelling events for some time when a friend suggested that we take a class together. I did and I am delighted to be part of this storytelling project. Unfortunately my friend didn’t make it, she pulled the old Lucy and Charlie Brown football trick and left me to do this on my own. The failed communication between us plays the perfect counterpoint to the art of communicating through storytelling that this class teaches. And to me that is what storytelling is. It is the art of relating with those around us through tales of our own individual experiences. Storytelling comes from the heart and that can be forgotten with the successes and challenges of our daily life.

This most basic form of communicating that we have been practicing throughout our existence is a delight to be a part of. It is so elemental and pure that the importance of this act of relating is, as I said, often overlooked resulting in our own loss.  As we tell our stories we are adding to and creating the next phase of our human experience, the human experience that goes back beyond the written or painted word. And in the telling of our stories each of us gets to grow a little every time the story is told and the audience of 1 or 100 or more gets to relate to and learn more this peek into the inner souls of those we live with.

We are lucky to have this opportunity granted to us with classes such as this. Taking these classes reminds me that everyone is important and has a story to tell. And this is where we learn how to tell them. Considering the clamor that the modern human faces each day, both the digital clatter and from the rumble of modern life, to have a place where one can stand and tell their story is a valid and true experience. In that moment, the individual speaker can be heard and listened to and that is a human need. The essence of the human story is found here.

And yes, I, too, am considering taking another class. However, that may be more of a sure thing if my Coyote Trickster of a friend follows through on her promise to take the class and then does take the class! However, on a more solemn note, I can easily say that this is a class that would benefit all who takes it. No doubt about it.

I’m so glad that your friend pulled a “Lucy!” and that you are my classmate in this endeavor. You really capture in this blog that human-to-human connection we make when we listen to stories. I’m really struck about how much we learn about each other as we listen to each story and how we collectively create a community in this process.

Great perspective, Ralph. Couldn’t agree more. This class has been a transformative experience for me. What pleasure it has been to hear you and others in our class transport us to moments in your lives and see those experiences from their eyes.

We do learn about each other and you have experienced some very interesting times and places! I am amazed at how close our classroom community has become in these short weeks together. Hope you are able to take another class, with or without the trickster!

Paul you have been a blessing! I could not have learned as much as I did about your life and you I think if your friend had been in class. Without her you were left vulnerable and had to use your own devices to get through this class and tell us about you. Thank you so much for your wonderful stories!
