Heart Gold by Kathy Eastman

Last week I was researching the Peralta Stones for a storytelling program on the search for gold in Arizona.  Popular sources tout these stones as a treasure map to the Superstition Mountains. However scholars question their authenticity for a wide range of reasons.  Some geologists say the idea of gold ore in the area is completely bogus.  Another question relates to the use of the prominent heart shape on one of the stones.  My mind linked the finding of gold to the heart shape/love symbol in the Peralta Stones. The heart symbol has been associated with love at least since the Middle Ages. And we all know stories about pots of gold. Folktales about dreamers who seek treasure abroad but find it at home have their own specific type – 1648.  So are the stones really a map telling us we are looking for love in all the wrong places?!  Happy Valentine’s Day!

After pondering your great story on the rock maps to gold treasure and the many stories on searching for your hearts true desire, which in some cases are one in the same, I must say I am seriously thinking of a road trip out to Superstition Mountains, with my rock map in hand. Should I encounter treasure or my hearts true desire I will most certainly let you all know,
    Happy Valentine’s Day.

Kathy thank you for the information post and the great picture. If you decide to go to the superstition Mountain maybe you could include other storytellers for some shared inspiration. The concept of rock maps and love or the lack of it is fascinating to me. I have been inspired to learn more stories around holidays and celebrations within the vast diversity here in the USA.
Thank you for adding Valentine’s Day to my growing list.
