Sylvan Carnivores Beware! by Sulé Greg Wilson

It’s amazing – the Little Red Riding Hood icon is everywhere.  From a medieval wariness of sylvan carnivores to doe-eyed Amanda Seyfried  in the 2011 photoplay on who the village’s werewolf really is…she lives!  There is so much for a storyteller/musician to choose from: Cajun swamp, French Salon, German mass market, AfrAm urban, and feminist versions!  The “original” folk story has no red garments—and no helpless chick – but does have a young woman who gets herself out of a nasty situation.  Some early versions have an ogre or “Bzou” (werewolf) as the antagonist against the sometimes innocent, sometimes foolhardy girl—so the movie’s not far off that way.  And its PG-13 rating’s nothing compared to the real folk tale!  “Believe the Legend—Beware the Wolf”!

And be certain when walking through the woods to choose the Path of Pins vs. the Path of Needles.

The movie couldn’t come close to being as intense or scary as the original 14th century version. Pins and needles indeed.

Which way will you choose????? Pins–domesticity, or
    Needles–Street Life?
