Hey There Little Red Riding Hood by Sulé Greg Wilson

Little Red Riding Hood has multiple personality disorder, or is schizophrenic, at the very least.  The folk tale teaches us that she’s smart. The 18th century bourgeoisie tell us she’s a fool. Und der 19th century kindermarchen inform us she can be redeemed.  But in the 20th century there are two choices: she’s pure innocence or Hot! Hot! Hot!

Do a YouTube search on Red and up come Japanese commercials with bouncing  animal body parts. You can also see animated cartoons where Wolf “eats” Red, alright.  This might be followed by Tex Avery’s howling canine…and don’t forget Sam the Sham!  For tamer fare there’s Disney, Little Audrey, “Storytime Felts” – a kinda creepie weeble-escent tag game for outdoor fun, and finally a saccharine Slavic  kid’s tune with over 2,500,000 hits!  Who is this girl?  More to the point, who are we to put all this on her?

Interesting to read about how she’s changed over the centuries. The innocent one kind of creeps me out, so I think I prefer the hot one. Not sure how she fits into the story I’m familiar with, though…

What is it that’s creepy–the bottle of wine, or the fish eyes?

I never though about Red in the “good” girl “bad” girl aspect or thought that this story had any kind of sexual content to it.

I’m not sure that mixing a very sexy image with a usual children’s story is right thing to do. Hollywood does like to take innocence from things and add sexuality to everything they produce so it doesn’t surprise me that they have sucessfully done this to little red riding hood.

It’s amazing how this classic children’s story has evolved with time. This is more adult-view kind of story.

I knew that there was 2 different kind of story about the red riding hood but didnt know there were many more versions. Also, my wife will be telling the mean version of red riding hood to ASL Interpreter’s workshop. It sure have changed since the original story that you cant tell which is original anymore.

One of the most fascinating areas of research in folktales is the origins of the more “popular culture” versions of tales like Red Riding Hood, Cinderella etc. Most of these stories were not intended for children.
