Growing With Stories by Tricia Phillips

I began my storytelling journey just over a year ago.  I have grown tremendously in my telling and understanding of stories.  I came into Mythology thinking I was going to learn about Greek and Roman Gods.  I did, but that was only a small fraction of what I took away from that class.

It's like Eva Valdez says, "Professor Torres catches us, and Professor Warren reels us in."  After that Mythology class ended I was hooked.  I wasn’t just hooked on the learning and stories.  I was hooked on the storytelling community at SMCC.

Think about it, I get to come to class and learn an awesome skill, and hear great stories from some amazing people.  How could I ever have more fun on a weeknight?  I look forward to hearing from my fellow story-crafters as well as see them.

I began my journey in hopes that storytelling would help me with my public speaking; it has.  It has also helped me to reflect within myself and open myself a bit more easily with others.  I am shy, but I see myself coming out of my comfort zone more and more.

I didn't think I would take as many storytelling classes as I have.  I also never had the thought of completing the storytelling certificate, but I just might.

Yes indeed – we are hooked! I’m glad to be one of your fellow story-crafters. I planned to take a class for fun – and now I’m hoping to complete my Storytelling Certificate next year! It has been a joy to watch you “come out of your shell!” You are very talented and when you tell your personal stories – I feel I’m being given a glimpse into your life, your culture, and your unique perspective of the world. In other words – I LOVE your stories. Thanks for sharing them with me and all of our classmates!

I love to hear your stories of how you cooked with your brother. So glad we’d can take some classes together.

Tricia OMG I just planned on taking this one class. I told Liz I want to continue – maybe take a class a semester. Next semester looking at taking private singing though then jump back to Story Telling. Keep keeping on! Love getting hooked in.
