The healing power of storytelling has been demonstrated many times in the classes and events I have attended over the last couple of years. It’s a way for us to connect to one another in a given amount of time without necessarily knowing one another’s name or past. The field can become fair for all of us to play on, if we open ourselves up to listen to the teller, and if the teller allows themself to become vulnerable enough to let connection take place.
The exciting part of this is anyone can tell a story. The scary part is telling the story. How can this be? I asked my teacher this once and she told me the fear is because I care about the story. She told me to relax and let the story come through me.
How does one do that? Take a deep breath, release your fear back into the earth. Imagine your body is a clear tube that is a conduit for a story, transitioning from a nervous Betty to a steady vessel that allows the story to be told. In other words, get out of your own way!
I know this is easier said than done. So maybe do some deep breathing, or yoga, or if you're short on time have a glass of wine. If you are really tight on time, take a shot of courage, and go out and let your story be told!
