The Journey of the Hero, the Heroine, and the Path In Between by Coral Evans

For years, the Hero’s Journey has been presented as a universal roadmap for growth: a call to adventure, trials to overcome, and a triumphant return. Only recently have many of us begun to ask whose experiences that roadmap truly reflects. When we look more
closely, we see that the Heroine’s Journey often follows a different rhythm—one rooted in inward healing, reconciliation, and becoming whole. Yet for Black women, the story is rarely so neatly divided. Our lives seldom allow us the luxury of choosing one journey over the other.

From an early age, many Black women are called to face “monsters” long before they are ready—instability, responsibility assumed too soon, and societal expectations that demand resilience over vulnerability. Survival often requires qualities associated with
the traditional hero: strength, endurance, and perseverance. At the same time, an unspoken, deeply personal journey unfolds beneath the surface—a desire for softness, authenticity, and the freedom to exist fully in one’s femininity without consequence.

What makes this story uniquely powerful is that living both journeys is not a contradiction—it is a testament to depth. Along the way, help often arrives in unexpected forms: strangers who show kindness at just the right moment, support that appears when it is most needed, and quiet victories that redefine what success truly means. These moments remind us that even while surviving, we are still becoming.

Perhaps the most honest narrative, then, is not about choosing between being the hero or the heroine. For Black women, the truest reflection lives in the overlap. It is the space where strength and softness coexist, where endurance does not erase humanity, and
where survival itself becomes a form of storytelling. And in telling that truth, we reveal something undeniably good.
